Our topcoat is back! Our version of the classic Balmacaan coat relaxes the design with a slightly longer length: more practical, warm and flattering (can be taken up easily, however, like all of our tailored clothes). With a full cut that is designed to be worn over tailoring, we recommend taking your normal jacket size. Soft raglan shoulders and a Prussian collar that can be worn up or down, horn buttons, and fully lined in a beautiful merlot-colored bemberg.
The Balmacaan coat, named after the Balmacaan Estate near Inverness, was originally designed to keep the wearer warm and dry in Scottish winters. Like a blanket with sleeves (the first one was rumored to be made from a Scottish plaid or great kilt) we are keeping with the tradition that they are made from hearty tweeds and meant above all to be practical.
You know we love a good Duke of Windsor origin story, and this coat was said to be popularized when the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor, wore one to the Epsom Derby in 1929.
We have chosen a warm, substantial 25 oz undyed 100% British wool in a neutral, go with everything, classic dark brown and grey herringbone. The cloth has a beautiful depth of color that comes from the natural undyed yarn, reflecting the variety of natural colors of the sheep in the area, from white to grey to black. Soft and warm yet tough and built to last, and just in time for the coldest days of winter. Bundle up, you'll be glad you did. Made in Portugal.
